On March 19, 2011, a fully loaded freight train which is known as the first China-Europe Railway Express came onto the way from Chongqing China to Duisburg in Germany. Over 10 years, the number of freight trains running between Mainland China and Europe has grown from less than 20 to more than 12,400 in 2020 in an average annual growth rate of 108%. So far, more than 33,600 freight trains have successfully completed their journeys between China and Europe transporting more than 3 million of standard containers with the total value of commodity of CNY 160 billion Yuan. Comparing to Air cargo transportation, China-Europe Railway Express is cheap while comparing to sea shipping it is fast and environmentally friendly, therefore, more and more goods are now moving internationally through China Europe rail routes.

The western, middle and eastern passageways are available for the China-Europe express train. On the west passageway, the train crosses border at either Alashankou Port or Huoerguosi Port in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Alashankou Port mainly serves China-Europe freight trains such as Yuxinou (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe), Zhengxinou (Zhengzhou-Xinjiang-Europe), Changanhao (Xian-Xinjiang-Europe), Rongxinou (Chengdu-Xinjiang-Europe) and etc. Goods including cars, lumbers, fine minerals, LED monitors, notebook computers and automobile accessories from China and European countries such as Germany, Poland, Belgium, Russia go abroad from Alashankou Port to tap the new market. In the first half year of 2021, Alashankou Port has welcomed and seen off 3,033 international freight trains, an increase of 41.07% comparing to the same period of last year. On the other hand, Huoerguosi has the largest rail port with the average daily number of freight trains passing through it of 18 or 21 at the maximum. This year 2021, Huoerguosi Rail Port has also opened 7 new routes including Wuyishan-Almaty, Huoerguosi-Moscow, Turpan-Russia and etc and extended the route number it served to 28. On the middle passageway, the train crosses border at Erenhot Port in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In the first half year of 2021, 1241 international freight trains have crossed border through Erenhot Rail Port, an increase of 28.07% comparing to the same period of last year. On the eastern passageway, the train crosses border through either Manzhouli Port in Inner Mongolia Region or Suifenhe Port in Heilongjiang Province. Goods traveling through the eastern passageway mainly made in Tianjin, Changsha, Guangzhou, Suzhou and other cities in southeast China's coastal cities. In the first half year of 2021, Suifenhe Port has witnessed an increase of 247% on the number of international freight trains comparing to the same period of last year.

China-Europe Railway Express train are now running on 73 routes connecting more than 50 cities in Mainland China with 168 cities from 23 countries in the world. In China, cities that top China-Europe rail freight transportation are Xi'an, Chongqing, Chengdu, Zhengzhou, Yiwu Jinhua and Urumqi.
